One of the astronauts, near the very end of this documentary, mentions something briefly about Armstrong being somewhat of a "recluse" now and it "being understandable with what he's gone through." From what I've read, a lot of people have tried to make money off him in shady ways and so now he's withdrawn from the public spotlight. NASA lost all audio from Apollo in Opie's In The Shadow Of The Moon by BBC - "At the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas lie around 10,000 rolls of 16mm film stacked in gleaming metal cannisters; a testament to the celluloid age. Most of this footage has lain untouched since the 1960s. But there was a huge problem with the film they found. There were no sound rolls to go with them. The entire archive, from the most mundane footage of bespectacled engineers eating lunch in the canteen to the very moment in Mission Control when Neil Armstrong placed his foot onto the lunar surface, was mute. 'We knew that the sound had to be somewhere but a frustrating trawl of the national archives turned up nothing,' says Chris Riley, the film's co-producer and assistant director. Chris began to trawl the internet for sound files which had been uploaded by Apollo fans. After an extensive search David came across the name of David Woods, an Apollo expert from Glasgow, Scotland. It was all there in Glasgow, just a few hundred miles from where they were putting the film together! After marrying up the audio and vusual material very generally, David had to carefully lip-sync the two together with nothing more than a keen ear. Space Radiation Too Deadly For Mars Mission - Dangerous levels of radiation in space could bar astronauts from a mission to Mars and limit prolonged activity on the moon, experts now caution. The magnetic field of Earth protects humanity from radiation in space that can damage or kill cells. Once beyond this shield, people become far more vulnerable. Astronauts have long seen white flashes while in space due to cosmic rays, or extremely high-energy particles, passing through their heads. A return to the moon or a mission to Mars that NASA and other space agencies are planning would place astronauts at continued risk from cosmic rays or dangerous bursts of solar radiation. Still, much remains uncertain regarding the actual risks that space radiation poses for the body, explained committee member Walter Schimmerling, a scientist now retired from NASA's space radiation program. All these uncertainties mean that safety margins have to remain high, limiting how long astronauts can stay in space. This in turn could rule out a mission to Mars, as well as long-term or multiple missions to the moon. To enable at the very least lunar missions with astronauts, the committee stressed that radiation biology research deserved the highest priority. However, the experts noted that NASA's space radiation biology research has been significantly compromised by recent cuts in funding, leading to major gaps in our knowledge of the health risks of radiation, such as cancer, neurological damage and degenerative tissue disease. The sun is a major source of dangerous radiation astronauts might encounter especially during solar storms that can erupt with little notice. AstroProfs Page - Dr James Van Allen - When the United States and Soviet Union both announced that they would launch an Earth orbiting satellite for the International Geophysical Year (1957-1958), he began work with the Army's Jet Propulsion Laboratory to put miniaturized radiation detectors in a small satellite. With the failure of the Vanguard rockets to launch a satellite, the Army launched JPL's 'Explorer I', with Van Allen's detector onboard, atop an Army rocket designed by Wernher von Braun. Explorer I, and its two successors Explorer II and Explorer III, found very high radiation levels in space. Van Allen deduced from these results that this meant that there must be bands or radiation surrounding Earth. These are now known as the Van Allen Radiation Belts. They are charged particles caught in Earth's magnetic field. Despite the fact that the Soviet Union beat us into space, our satellites produced far more useful data than the early Sputniks did.

Dr James Van Allen - "With Explorer 1, the highest rate we could observe was 2,000 counts per second. We were able to calibrate that apparatus after the fact. We did a laboratory calibration on a spare instrument using that calibration curve of 100,000 counts per second. The intense radiation saturated the counter."

Van Allen Radiation Belt - Less reassuring news came from a team of cosmic ray experts at the State University of Iowa headed by Dr. James A. Van Allen. Both Explorer I and Explorer III, said Van Allen, ran into a belt of intense radiation at about 600 miles elevation. Each of the satellites carries a single Geiger tube to count cosmic rays. The radio transmitter of Explorer I sends a signal whenever the tube has made 128 counts. Explorer III has a magnetic tape that records the tube's counts during each circuit of the earth and reports to a ground station. When the Explorers' orbits were carrying them near the earth, they both reported reasonable numbers of cosmic rays, around 30 per second, but as they climbed up toward their apogees the count came faster. At 1,100 kilometers (684 miles) the tubes registered as high as 140 counts per second. Then a strange thing happened. As the satellites climbed even higher, the transmitters reported no rays at all. During orbit after orbit the counter of Explorer III was silent for 15 minutes. When the satellites swung down again to lower levels, they resumed reporting reasonable numbers of cosmic rays. Van Allen was sure that no ray-free belt could exist between the earth and space. The only reasonable explanation, he decided, was that the silenced Geiger tubes had been knocked out temporarily by radiation too intense for them to handle. So he subjected a spare tube to X-ray bombardment in the laboratory. After studying its behavior, he decided that the tubes carried by the satellites must have passed through radiation equivalent to 35,000 counts per second, but were so choked up that they could not report their experience. The belt may extend outward for two earth radii (8,000) miles before it disappears. Van Allen figured that the radiation level inside the satellite might reach about 0.06 roentgens per hour. At this rate a man would receive in five hours his maximum weekly permissible dose of 0.3 roentgens. A small amount of lead shielding would reduce the dose to a supportable level. Capricorn One starred Elliott Gould, James Brolin and yes, everyone’s favourite spaceman O.J Simpson, as NASA astronauts who discover that an Apollo Mars mission was faked. It’s definitely a cool subject for a film; there are theories that the Apollo moon landing was not real, and Hyams managed to make a movie about this by changing the story a bit and adding some fairly exagerrated fictional twists. Well now, nearly 30 years later, Peter Hyams is developing a remake of the film called… Capricorn Two. Director Peter Hyams is said to be in development on a remake of his 80s sci-fi piece, 'Capricorn One'. The 'Time Cop' and 'Sound of Thunder' helmer will produce, and Dave Dobkin ('Shanghai Knights') will direct. The remake, imaginatively titled Capricorn 2, has apparently been in the early development stages for six months, with a late 2007 start date. Peter Buchman (Jurassic Park III) will write the remake. Regency are behind the redo. John Davis (I Robot 2) is also onboard to produce.

The Making of Capricorn One - Born from post-Watergate angst and television's increasing technological versatility, the film remains an effective thriller and adventure story, tightly-written and tautly directed by Peter Hyams, wherein the idea of government secrets to be kept at any cost is even more viable today than it was in 1978. The story developed years before, when Peter Hyams, then working at CBS's Boston office, was helping to cover the Apollo moon shots. While working there, Hyams witnessed the NASA-constructed simulations to be aired on network news, showing the world what was happening with the craft in space as it flew to its destination. The key to getting such a film made within the budget available was to have NASA's cooperation, a situation Lazarus had enjoyed on Futureworld. A stunt-heavy picture, Capricorn Onecould only gain from the Space Administration's assistance, but the very nature of the storyNASA killing its own to keep a secretcaused Lazarus to despair of any further help from the organization. 'This is a highly unlikely film to get NASA cooperation, because they are the bad guys in the movie,' says Lazarus. 'But I called my contact at the NASA Clear Lake facility, and he said he would have to see a script. I said to Peter, 'We're dead.' I sent the script and my contact said, 'Oh, it's a good story! We'll be happy to give you our prototype landing module.' 'Much after the fact, I said to someone at NASA, 'How could you possibly have approved that script?' He said, 'If it had gone to Washington, you would have been finished, but because we liked working with you on Futureworld, I took it upon myself to give cooperation.' I said, 'We're really grateful and surprised.' He said, 'I thought you might be.'' We put the picture in Westwood on a Friday night, and people stood and cheered. Warner Bros considered that a freak result. We took it to San Francisco, got the same result. The film was the most successful independently-financed film of the year. Lazarus never heard what NASA officials thought of the film that portrayed them as frauds and killers. Capricorn One was, by definition, a US Government Conspiracy picture. A woman named Gay Yee Hill was the moderator for the NASA broadcast. What follows is what transpired on the NASA channel, about 90 minutes after the spacecraft landed. On this great historic moment, WHY was there such a delay in JPL displaying these images? Several minutes later only a few images from Mars were shown in this order: 1. Several images of the Phoenix solar panel array 2. One image of a circular foot pad supporting the Phoenix spacecraft. This is very similar to the foot pads on the Lunar Lander or Viking Lander. 3. One image of the horizon. Were any of these images in color? Of course not. Here in 2008, WHY are we still seeing MONOCROME images? The woman interviewing a project engineer eventually asked, "Will we be seeing color images?" The answer was "Yes indeed, we will be seeing color images... in the future." Technically, there is NO reason for these live images to not be in color except for one major reason - people will realize that "Mars" isn't red after all, but it has a blue sky almost identical to that of Earth. After about 20 minutes, the interviewer Gay Yee Hill announced "JPL's part in the mission is now done, and they will be handing control of the mission to the University of Arizona." What we saw today is a dramatic replay of the Viking lander more than 30 years ago, complete with another image of the spacecraft's foot and a view of the horizon. But those images broadcast more than 30 years ago from "Mars" were in COLOR. But not images in 2008! Who can believe this nonsense? One can only hope that the images we are seeing actually are coming from Mars...and not from a stage somewhere.

Communist China caught FAKING its first Moon photo - The head scientist of China's flagship lunar probe programme has been forced to defend the authenticity of its first published photograph after internet moon-gazers suggested it might be a copy. The Chinese prime minister, Wen Jiabao, unveiled the first photograph sent back on the inaugural mission of the Chang-e 1 lunar probe amid much patriotic emotion last week. But in a response to public scepticism unusual for such a token of national pride, internet bulletin boards began pointing out the similarity of the photograph to one published by NASA, the American space agency, two years ago. Ouyang Ziyuan, head scientist of the China Lunar Exploration Project, issued a statement insisting the photograph had not been copied and really was genuine. "China's first moon photo is absolutely not a fake,” he said, adding that though the two shots were of the same part of the moon's surface, a new crater was shown in the Chinese version. Chang'e 1, named after a fairy who fled to the moon from an unhappy marriage, was launched in October to much fanfare. It represents the start of the second phase, after manned space flight, of China's long-term goal of putting a man on the moon by 2020. But one bulletin board poster, who called himself IMCC, wondered if it was a coincidence that the picture was so similar to the NASA version. "The two pictures are not just alike," he wrote. "They are actually are the same. If this is indeed a fake, I feel truly sorry. How can such a big country try to fool the public?" The suggestion might be regarded as another coming-of-age ritual for the fast-developing China, like the space programme itself. After all, the allegation that Neil Armstrong's moon landing of 1969 was faked by NASA is one of the international conspiracy theorist's favourites. However it comes at a time when China's 160 million internet surfers scent blood. The most widely discussed dispute of recent weeks has been about whether a photograph allegedly of a South China tiger in a forest, which would have been the first sighting for years of an animal now thought only to survive in zoos, was created by photoshop. An official inquiry yesterday pronounced it fake - two weeks after an internet hunt which eventually found a calendar shot of a tiger whose appearance was identical to that apparently photographed in the forest. "When the tiger-man was eventually shown to be a fake, the whole world laughed," IMCC went on. "Maybe this is the same. What on earth is going on?" Close examination of the two lunar photographs does suggest that they were of the same section of the moon - a highland area located between 54 to 70 degrees south latitude and 57 to 83 degrees east longitude. But just 37 years after Apollo 11, it is feared the magnetic tapes that recorded the first moon walk - beamed to the world via three tracking stations, including Parkes's famous "Dish" - have gone missing at NASA's Goddard Space Centre in Maryland. A desperate search has begun amid concerns the tapes will disintegrate to dust before they can be found. It is not widely known that the Apollo 11 television broadcast from the moon was a high-quality transmission, far sharper than the blurry version relayed instantly to the world on that July day in 1969. Among those battling to unscramble the mystery is John Sarkissian, a CSIRO scientist stationed at Parkes for a decade. "We are working on the assumption they still exist," Mr Sarkissian told the Herald. "Your guess is a good as mine as to where they are." Mr Sarkissian began researching the role of Parkes in Apollo 11's mission in 1997, before the movie The Dish was made. However, when he later contacted NASA colleagues to ask about the tapes, they could not be found. "People may have thought 'we have tapes of the moon walk, we don't need these'," said the scientist who hopes a new, intensive hunt will locate them. If they can be found, he proposes making digitalised copies to treat the world to a very different view of history. But the searchers may be running out of time. The only known equipment on which the original analogue tapes can be decoded is at a Goddard centre set to close in October, raising fears that even if they are found before they deteriorate, copying them may be impossible. Originally stored at Goddard, the tapes were moved in 1970 to the US National Archives. No one knows why, but in 1984 about 700 boxes of space flight tapes there were returned to Goddard. "We have the documents to say they were withdrawn, but no one knows exactly where they went," Mr Sarkissian said. Also among tapes feared missing are the original recordings of the other five Apollo moon landings. The format used by the original pictures beamed from the moon was not compatible with commercial technology used by television networks. So the images received at Parkes, and at tracking stations near Canberra and in California, were played on screens mounted in front of conventional television cameras. "The quality of what you saw on TV at home was substantially degraded" in the process, Mr Sarkissian said, creating the ghostly images of Armstrong and Aldrin that strained the eyes of hundreds of millions of people watching around the world.

Forget Apollo, Antarctic Moon-rock better - A rare, golf-ball-sized lunar meteorite recently discovered in the snow fields of Antarctica can tell us more about the Moon than samples taken directly from the lunar surface, according to researchers. The meteorite, known as MIL 05035, is similar in bulk and composition to basaltic lavas that fill the lunar maria, an expansive part of the Moon's surface not sampled by the U.S. Apollo program. Only one other meteorite of this type has ever been found. Lunar meteorites found on the Earth seem to be more representative of the Moon as a whole, he said. "They can give us an idea of the variety of rocks that we should expect over a broader swathe of the Moon." MIL 05035 was discovered on an icefield in the Transantarctic Mountains, roughly 750 km from the South Pole. A black rock, slightly larger than a golfball and weighing 142.2 g, the meteorite's chemical composition suggests it has been subjected to extreme shock, probably due to impact events. Large crystals suggest it formed by slow cooling deep within the Moon's crust. Over 200 meteorites were found in Antarctica by a field party from the U.S. Antarctic Search for Meteorites program (ANSMET) during their 2005-2006 mission. In the meantime, exploration will be left to the agents of ANSMET, who spend six weeks of every year living in tents on the ice, searching Antarctica for meteorites.

The simulant's chemical composition, mineralogy, particle size distribution, specific gravity, angle of internal friction, and cohesion have been characterized and fall within the ranges of lunar mare soil samples. "We were ready to co-operate, but for unknown reasons, the United States have said they will undertake this programme themselves," Anatoly Perminov said. US space agency Nasa has said it plans to start work on a base on the Moon when astronauts return there in 2020. Nasa and Russia's federal space agency Roskosmos have experience of working together on the International Space Station (ISS). The construction of the ISS has relied heavily on Russian Soyuz spacecraft to ferry personnel and supplies, particularly when all US space shuttles were grounded as a result of the Columbia disaster in 2003 in which seven astronauts died. And Mr Perminov announced that Roskosmos had signed a "contract for nearly $1bn" with Nasa to supply cargo shuttles between now and 2011 for the ISS. Mr Perminov said that he hoped Russian and US expertise could also be pooled as part of Nasa's plan to build a permanently-occupied Moon base. "Strange as it is, the United States is short of experts to implement the programme," Interfax quoted him as saying. The base is likely to be built on one of the Moon's poles and will serve as a science centre and possible stepping stone for manned missions to Mars. The US has already said it plans to build a new lunar spacecraft using funds diverted from space shuttle flights, due to be scrapped in 2010.

Six people aboard the train were reported injured. One of the cars, carrying one fully fueled rocket section, overturned. The shuttle's twin boosters are 150 feet tall and consist of four propellant segments each. They are used during liftoff and the first two minutes or so of flight. NASA borrows ideas from Apollo program - Jim Snoddy and other NASA engineers didn't just go to the drawing board or a warehouse when they needed ideas — and parts — for America's next lunar rocket. They went to space museums. Facing tight deadlines and uncertain budgets as it works on President Bush Jr's plan to send astronauts back to the moon and on to Mars, NASA is both cannibalizing and analyzing pieces of its glory years, namely the Apollo program that first allegedly put humans on the lunar surface in 1969. Snoddy, a manager at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center, has been removing valves and other parts from Apollo exhibits as he oversees construction of the upper-stage engine on the new moon rocket, dubbed Ares 1. Some of the pieces and accompanying documentation are not available anywhere but museums, he said. As part of the effort to draw on NASA's past, space executives visited the state-owned U.S. Space and Rocket Center museum in Huntsville to borrow an Apollo operations manual from 1969, and an engineer working on a new lunar lander went to see an unused lunar descent stage on display at the museum. The same thing is going on at the Smithsonian Institution and Space Center Houston, where exhibits manager Paul Spana said he has had about a dozen visits this year from young NASA engineers and contractors trying to figure out how their predecessors sent people to the moon. The bombardment of the lunar surface by galactic cosmic rays causes some other elements to emit gamma-rays. The Gamma-ray Spectrometer measured this radiation from lunar orbit to produce maps of the abundances of thorium, iron, and titanium on the lunar surface. The different elements were identified based on the energy of the gamma-rays that they emitted. The abundances of these elements were determined from the intensity of the gamma-rays (the greater the intensity of the gamma-rays, the greater the abundance of the element). But the astronots never got cooked by Gamma rays.

Apollo X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometer Experiment - In order to better understand the Moon's overall chemical composition, the X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometer and the Gamma-ray Spectrometer studied the composition of the Moon's surface from lunar orbit. These experiments were flown on both Apollo 15 and Apollo 16. When X-rays from the Sun strike the lunar surface, they can cause some elements to emit additional X-rays, a process known as fluorescence. The elements that emit the X-rays can be identified based on the energy of the X-rays that are emitted. The abundances of these elements can be determined from the intensity of the emitted x-rays (the greater the intensity of the X-rays, the greater the abundance of the element). The X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometer measured the abundances of the elements magnesium, aluminum, and silicon. In all, about 9% of the Moon's surface was studied by this experiment. The X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometer was also used on the return voyage to Earth to study astronomical objects that emit X-rays. In particular, the objects Cygnus X-1 and Scorpius X-1 were both intensively studied. But the astronots never got cooked by X-rays.

Apollo Cosmic Ray Detector - The Cosmic Ray Detector measured very high energy cosmic rays from the Sun and other parts of our galaxy. The Cosmic Ray Detector Experiment was performed on Apollo 16. A reduced-scale version of this experiment was also performed on Apollo 17, when it was called the Lunar Surface Cosmic Ray Experiment. These experiments measured particles with energies of 100,000 to 150 million electron volts, much higher than measured by any other experiment during the Apollo program. The particles detected by these experiments originate both in the solar wind and from sources elsewhere in our galaxy. On Apollo 16, particles from a solar flare (an energetic eruption of material away from the surface of the Sun) were also recorded. On both missions, the experiment was ended during the third moonwalk, for a total detector exposure time of 167 hours on Apollo 16 and 45 hours on Apollo 17. The detector plates were returned to Earth for laboratory analysis. When cosmic ray particles penetrated the detector plates, they created microscopic tracks in the plates. The composition of each cosmic ray particle was determined from the shape of the track it left, and the particle's energy was determined from the depth to which the track penetrated. This Apollo 16C experiment was designed to measure the charge, mass, and energy spectrum of solar wind and heavy cosmic rays in the energy ranges from 0.5 to 10 keV/nucleon and from 0.2 to 200 Million Electron Volts nucleon. But the astronots never got perforated by cosmic rays.

Apollo Far Ultraviolet Camera Spectrograph - The Far Ultraviolet Camera/Spectrograph took pictures and spectra of astronomical objects in ultraviolet light. Ultraviolet (UV) light is a type of electromagnetic radiation at wavelengths that are shorter than can be seen with the human eye. Most UV light from astronomical sources is absorbed by the Earth's atmosphere and does not penetrate to the surface. Nevertheless, studying the UV emission of astronomical objects is important because such emissions come from objects that are much hotter than our Sun. The Far Ultraviolet Camera/Spectrograph was carried on Apollo 16. It used a 3-inch telescope to obtain images and spectra at wavelengths between 500 and 1600 Angstroms; (visible light corresponds to wavelengths of 4000-7000 Angstroms). Emission at these wavelengths comes primarily from very hot stars of spectral classes O, B, and A, with surface temperatures of 10,000° to 50,000° K. For comparison, the temperature at the visible surface of the Sun is about 5800° K or 11,000°F. Stars as faint as magnitude 11, or 100 times fainter than can be seen with the human eye, were recorded. Results were recorded on a film cartridge and returned to Earth for analysis. But the astronots never got sunburned.

This false color picture shows how the Earth glows in ultraviolet (UV) light. UV light is so blue humans can't see it. Very little UV light is transmitted through the Earth's atmosphere but what sunlight does make it through can cause a sunburn. The Far UV Camera / Spectrograph deployed and left on the Moon by the crew of Apollo 16 took the above picture. The part of the Earth facing the Sun reflects much UV light, but perhaps more interesting is the side facing away from the Sun. Here bands of UV emission are also apparent. These bands are the result of aurorae and are caused by charged particles expelled by the Sun.

Lunar Prospector Gamma Ray Spectrometer Maps - The Lunar Prospector Gamma-Ray Spectrometer (GRS) has acquired the first global measurements of gamma-ray spectra from the lunar surface. Since the aluminum gamma-ray line (7.72 Million Electron Volts) is one of the only gamma-ray lines that can produce an interference with the iron lines (7.6 MeV), this suggests that some of these high-count-rate regions may be due to high aluminum abundances.

GLAST Gamma Ray Space Telescope - This new picture is the first detailed image of our planet radiating gamma rays, a type of light that is millions to billions of times more energetic than visible light. The image portrays how the Earth is constantly bombarded by particles from space. These particles, called cosmic rays, hit our atmosphere and produce the gamma-ray light high above the Earth. The atmosphere blocks harmful cosmic rays and other high-energy radiation from reaching us on the Earth's surface.

Sungrazing Comet Possibly Hit by Solar Eruption - The SOHO spacecraft is currently generating spectacular images of a recently found comet called NEAT as the icy body circles the Sun and appears to have been struck by a massive solar eruption. The chance encounter could lead to new discoveries about the interactions of comets with hot, charged particles billowing from the Sun. The comet is C/2002 V1. A solar eruption, called a coronal mass ejection (CME), appears to have hit the comet. NEAT was just one-tenth of Earth's distance from the Sun. While Earth orbits the Sun every year, comet NEAT requires about 37,000 years to make a single, elongated loop.

Comet Collisions Help Generate Puzzling Cosmic Rays, Study Shows - Collisions between icy comet-like objects out near Pluto are said to be responsible for certain types of otherwise inexplicable cosmic rays that zip through the solar system, according to astronomers. The frozen Kuiper Belt Objects, leftovers of the solar systems birth, slam together and generate dust that drifts inward, polluting the entire solar system. Charged particles streaming out from the Sun interact with the dust, generating what astronomers call anomalous cosmic rays. Cosmic rays are the most energetic particles known. Anomalous cosmic rays are so named because they form in the relative vicinity of the Earth, near the Sun. Cosmic rays move throughout the universe at light speed and constantly bombard the Earth.

Giant Solar Flare Hits US and Canada - A rowdy sunspot cluster hurled a record-breaking flare into space on Wednesday, blacking out all high- and low-frequency radio communications on both American continents, causing power surges, blinding satellites and lighting up aurorae. A massive initial X-ray flare on Sept. 7 was immediately followed by an eruption of solar material that broke free from the sun at a speed of 5.8 million miles per hour, the speediest seen in 20 years of CME observations by the National Center for Atmospheric Research's High Altitude Observatory in Hawaii. Earth and near-Earth space was first hit with X-rays, followed by an ongoing magnetic storm and hard radiation. Power systems in the northern U.S. states and Canada reported electrical surges on Thursday, said Combs, caused by the magnetic pulse from the solar eruption interacting with Earth's magnetic field, essentially turning the planet into a giant electrical generator (FREE ENERGY). Even NASA is on alert, Combs said, with Johnson Space Center's radiation experts staffing their desks around the clock to ensure that astronauts aboard the International Space Station are ready for any shower of heavy radiation. The powerful solar storms come as a bit of a surprise, said Combs, since the sun is supposed to be in the quiet part of its 10- to 12-year cycle.

Radiation Protection During Space Flight in Journal of Space and Environmental Medicine - Van Allen Radiation Belt Force Field has a dose equivalent rate of 3.2 rads per second. Solar and cosmic radiation sustain the radiation belts. Nuclear radiation at Earth distance is 0.32 rads per second. Apollo 17 was in the sunlight for 12 days and at 0.32 rads/sec each astronaut would have been exposed to 320,000 rads. NASA reports that death begins at 500 rads. John Mauldin, a physicist who works for NASA, said shielding at least two meters thick would be needed to protect the astronauts. Yet the walls of the Lunar Landers which took astronauts from the spaceship to the moon's surface were, said NASA, "about the thickness of heavy duty aluminum foil". Before the first manned Apollo fight even cleared the launch pad, a total of 11 Earth bound astronauts were dead. NASA public affairs officer Julian Scheer delighted 200 party guests with footage of astronauts on a mission film set identical to what NASA claimed was the real lunar landscape. "The purpose of this film," Scheer told the enthralled group, "is to indicate that you really can fake things on the ground, almost to the point of deception." He then invited his audience to "come to your own decision about whether or not man actually did walk on the Moon". And now NASA is planning another giant step - project Outreach, a 1 trillion dollar manned mission to Mars. "Think what they'll be able to mock up with today's computer graphics," says Rene chillingly. "Special effects was in its infancy in the 60s. This time round we'll have no way of determining the truth."

Hubble Space Telescope - The biggest baddest most expensive telescope in the Solar System is allegedly too weak to see sunlight reflected off the solid gold Apollo Moon Landers. If SMART-1 can get an eyeful, why not use the Hubble Space Telescope to take photos of the Apollo landing sites? Hubble did photograph the moon in 1999."Anything left on the moon cannot be resolved in any Hubble image," according to the Space Telescope Science Institute, which operates Hubble for NASA. Earth under attack by Cosmic Radiation from Milky Way's Big Black Hole - The supermassive black hole at the center of our Milky Way Galaxy contains 4 million solar masses, confined to an area about 10 times smaller than Earth's orbit around the Sun, and spins around every 11 minutes at 30 percent of the speed of light. Named Sagitarrius A, the Milky Way's Black Hole is 26,000 light-years away, surrounded by intense radio waves, X-rays and other radiation near the event horizon, or point of no return. NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory revealed that our galaxy's central black hole is a frequent bad actor, prone to numerous large explosions. We see it flaring on an almost daily basis, which astronomers are viewing 26,000 years later due to the time it takes light to travel to Earth from the center of the Galaxy. Huge lobes of 36-Million-degree-F gas extending over dozens of light years on either side of the black hole have also been discovered. The region around the central black hole contains more than 2,000 X-ray sources.

Giant Gamma Ray Space Blasts - Gamma ray bursts (GRBs) – the harbingers of death for some massive stars – are intense blasts of energy and radiation that eject from massive dying stars. The soft X-ray afterglow following the initial GRB can last for periods ranging from hours to weeks. Intense bursts of high-frequency gamma ray and X-ray radiation from exploding stars were discovered nearly four decades ago. Since NASA launched the Swift satellite in Nov. 2004, its detectors have picked up a burst every couple of days.

Black Hole Surprise: Multiple Gamma Ray Eruptions Seconds After Birth - Over the course of just a few minutes, as a massive star dies and a black hole is born, multiple explosions cause the black hole to powerfully eject matter as well as greedily consume it. It all starts with a gamma-ray burst – the most powerful type of explosion in the universe and an indicator that a massive star is dying in what astronomers call a hypernova. Stars are exploding two, three, and sometimes four times in the first minutes following the initial explosion. First comes a blast of gamma-rays followed by intense pulses of X-rays. The energies involved are much greater than anyone expected. Before these observations – made with NASA's Swift satellite telescope, which specializes in gamma-ray burst detection – scientists believed that star death was a single explosion event. On May 2, 2005, Swift detected the event, a 17-second gamma blast that occurred in the constellation Leo. About 500 seconds after this initial blast, Swift detected a spike in X-ray light – the hiccup – about a hundred times brighter than anything seen before. Scientists operating Swift have seen about a dozen cases of multiple explosions and ejected material. The radiation pressure of the fireball accelerates material to nearly the speed of light.

NASA Space Radiation FAQ - Ionizing radiation is radiation with sufficient energy to remove electrons from the orbits of atoms resulting in charged particles, and it is this type of radiation that is evaluated for purposes of radiation protection. Examples of ionizing radiation include gamma rays, protons, and neutrons. Ionizing radiation is different from ion formation that occurs in ordinary chemical reactions, where only the outermost electron is removed to form a positively charged ion. With ionizing radiation, electrons other than those in the outermost orbits can be released rendering the atom very unstable. Space radiation consists primarily of ionizing radiation in the form of high-energy, positively charged particles. There are three naturally occurring sources of space radiation: trapped radiation, galactic cosmic radiation (GCR), and solar particle events (SPE). The Sun produces a constant stream of particles which billow out into space at almost 1 million miles per hour. Some become trapped in the Earth's magnetic field. The trapped particles are contained in one of two doughnut-shaped magnetic rings surrounding the Earth called the Van Allen Radiation Belts. The inner belt contains a fairly stable population of protons exceeding 10-Million Electron Volts. The outer belt contains mainly electrons with energies up to 10-Million Electron Volts. Except for the Apollo missions, NASA's manned spaceflight missions have stayed well below the altitude of the Van Allen Belts. Galactic cosmic radiation originates from outside the solar system. It consists of ionized atoms ranging from a single proton up to an uranium nucleus. The most energetic particle ever observed had kinetic energy equivalent to that of a Nolan Ryan fastball. Solar particle events are injections of energetic electrons, protons, alpha particles, and heavier particles into interplanetary space. These particles are accelerated to near relativistic speeds by the interplanetary shock waves which precede fast coronal mass ejections and which exist in the vicinity of solar flare sites. The most energetic particles arrive at Earth within minutes. Solar flares are characterized by an explosive release of energy, usually in the form of X-rays. In just several minutes, flares may heat material to many millions of degrees and release as much energy as a billion megatons of TNT. A large coronal mass ejection can contain a billion tons of matter that can be accelerated to several million miles per hour. CMEs are often associated with solar flares. Near solar maximum, the Sun produces about three CMEs per day.

NASA Chief Admits NASA Is A Mistake - Chief Michael Griffin has told the editorial board at USA Today that the space shuttle, the international space station and nearly the entire U.S. manned space program for the past three decades were mistakes. Griffin said NASA lost its way in the 1970s when it ended the Apollo program. The space shuttle program has cost the lives of 14 astronauts and about $150 billon, Griffin said. Griffin also said it is now commonly accepted that the space shuttle was not on the right path and NASA is now trying to change the path while doing as little damage as they can. Griffin's comments are likely to be met with a lot of agreement on the Space Coast. NASA has been flying the shuttle since 1981 and it has never lived up to its promise. It is far more expensive, far less capable and far less safe that it was expected to be, Billow reported. "The shuttle is inherently flawed. It does not have an escape system for its crew, and we all know that since human perfectionism is unattainable, sooner or later, there will be another shuttle accident. I want to retire it before that flight can occur," Griffin told members of Congress on May 12. Last week, NASA unveiled the shuttle's replacement. The new system will depend on space shuttle systems but the shuttle itself is scheduled to go away in 2010. Part of the shuttle workforce will go away with it. The new moon rockets and spacecraft are inherently safer, similar to the Apollo system and will have something the space shuttle lacks -- an escape system that only works for the first 30 seconds of the launch, just like Apollo.

NASA launches spacesuit into space - SuitSat deployed 8 hours 35 minutes ago! Unlike a normal spacewalk, with a human inside the suit, SuitSat's temperature controls will be turned off to conserve power. The suit, arms and legs akimbo, possibly spinning, will be exposed to the fierce rays of the sun with no way to regulate its internal temperature. "Will the suit overheat?
