It took seven years of reading and reflection by the NY State Teacher of the Year to figure out that mass schooling of the young by force was a creation of the four great coal powers of the nineteenth century. Nearly one hundred years later, on April 11, 1933, Max Mason, president of the Rockefeller [Bill and Hillary Clinton Blythe] Foundation, announced to insiders that a comprehensive national program was underway to allow, in Mason’s words, “the control of human behavior.” Something strange has been going on in government schools, especially where the matter of reading is concerned. Abundant data exist to show that by 1840 the incidence of complex literacy in the United States was between 93 and 100 percent, wherever such a thing mattered. Yet compulsory schooling existed nowhere. Between the two world wars, schoolmen seem to have been assigned the task of terminating our universal reading proficiency. Vietnam-era young men had been schooled in the 1950s and the 1960s—much better schooled than either of the two earlier groups—but the 4 percent illiteracy of 1941 which had transmuted into the 19 percent illiteracy of 1952 had now had grown into the 27 percent illiteracy of 1970. During WWII, American public schools massively converted to non-phonetic ways of teaching reading. On the matter of violence alone this would seem to have impact: according to the Justice Department, 80 percent of the incarcerated violent criminal population is illiterate or nearly so (and 67 percent of all criminals locked up). As reading ability plummeted in America after WWII, crime soared, so did out-of-wedlock births, which doubled in the 1950s and doubled again in the ’60s, when bizarre violence for the first time became commonplace in daily life. Forget the 10 percent drop in SAT and Achievement Test scores the press beats to death with regularity; how do you explain the 37 percent decline since 1972 in students who score above 600 on the SAT? What should be made of a 50 percent decline among the most rarefied group of test-takers, those who score above 750? On the college rung of the school ladder something queer was occurring, too. In 1964, more than half of these institutions required a thesis or comprehensive for the bachelor’s degree; by 1993, 12 percent did. Fenty is a case in which the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit became the first federal appeals court in the United States to strike down a gun control law based on the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution, and the second to interpret the Second Amendment as protecting an individual right to bear arms. The 2-1 decision in Parker struck down a portion of a the Firearms Control Regulations Act of 1975, a local law in the District of Columbia that bars residents from owning handguns, automatic firearms, and high-capacity semi-automatic firearms, and prohibits possession of unregistered firearms.
Tennessee governor wants national guard to seize all guns under martial law - The governor is allowed to commandeer and restrict the sale of guns, alcohol, explosives and combustibles during natural disasters or other major emergencies under state law. Sen. Mark Norris, R-Collierville, wants to take firearms out of that equation. His bill would also prohibit local officials from taking weapons. He wants to avoid gun confiscations like those following Hurricane Katrina, Norris said in a statement last week. "We do not want a repeat of that scenario in Tennessee," Norris said. "The ability to defend one's home place and family in the absence of adequate law enforcement is essential." Norris has said that the Gov. Phil Bredesen's office opposes the measure.
The Battle of Athens Tennessee. - Paul Cantrell was elected sheriff in the 1936,1938 and 1940 elections, but by slim margins. The sheriff was the key county official. Cantrell was elected to the state senate in 1942 and 1944; his chief deputy, Pat Mansfield, was elected sheriff. In 1946 Paul Cantrell again sought the sheriff's office. At the end of 1945, some 3,000 battle-hardened veterans returned to McMinn County; the GIs held Cantrell politically responsible for Mansfield's doings. Early in 1946, some newly returned ex-GIs decided to challenge Cantrell politically by offering an all-ex-GI, non-partisan ticket. To intimidate voters, Mansfield brought in some 200 armed "deputies." GI poll-watchers were beaten almost at once. At about 3 p.m., Tom Gillespie, an African- American voter was told by a sheriff's deputy that he could not vote. Despite being beaten, Gillespie persisted. The enraged deputy shot him. The gunshot drew a crowd. Sheriff Mansfield told his deputies to disperse the crowd.
One deputy, "his gun raised high...shouted: 'If you sons of bitches cross this street I'll kill you!'" Mansfield took the ballot boxes to the jail for counting. The deputies seemed to fear immediate attack by the "people who had just liberated Europe and the South Pacific from two of the most powerful war machines in human history." Short of firearms and ammunition, the GIs scoured the county to find them. By borrowing keys to the National Guard and State Guard armories, they got three M-1 rifles, five .45 semi-automatic pistols and 24 British Enfield rifles. The armories were nearly empty after the war's end. By 8 p.m. a group of GIs and "local boys" headed for the jail but left the back door unguarded to give the jail's defenders an easy way out. Three GIs alerting passersby to danger were fired on from the jail. Two GIs were wounded. Other GIs returned fire. Firing subsided after 30 minutes. More than anything else, people were simply shooting at the jail. At about 2 a.m. on August 2, the GIs forced the issue. Men from Meigs County threw dynamite sticks and damaged the jail's porch. The panicked deputies surrendered. GIs quickly secured the building. Paul Cantrell faded into the night, having almost been shot by a GI who knew him, but whose .45 pistol had jammed. Mansfield's deputies were kept overnight in jail for their own safety. Calm soon returned. The GIs posted guards. The 79th Congress adjourned on August 2, 1946, when the Battle of Athens ended. However, Representative John Jennings Jr. from Tennessee decried McMinn County's sorry situation under Cantrell and Mansfield and the Justice Department's repeated failures to help the McMinn County residents. Jennings was delighted that "...at long last, decency and honesty, liberty and law have returned to the fine county of McMinn.." The Battle of the 2nd Amendment - The Democrats are back in power and their anti-gun wing is trying to make up for lost time as far as gun control legislation is concerned. There are a number of bills that have been introduced already, but GOA will be there to meet every challenge. Right now, we need your help in beating back a reintroduction of the so-called "assault weapons ban," the infamous bill that outlawed many types of firearms based primarily on cosmetics, misinformation and scare tactics.
The bill is HR 1022, and last month it was introduced by the Queen of Gun Control, Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY). Its 30 cosponsors comprise a list of the usual anti-gun suspects -- so we need to make sure that no pro-gun congressmen are duped into signing their names onto this anti-gun piece of trash. McCarthy entitled her bill the Assault Weapons Ban and Law Enforcement Protection Act of 2007, knowing these firearms aren't "assault weapons" and knowing the bill she is reintroducing does nothing to prevent violent crime -- since the guns in question have seldom been used in crime. McCarthy's bill would reinstate all of the now defunct provisions related to semi-automatic firearms and large capacity magazines. The manufacture and/or importation of many firearms would be prohibited. This would be paired with a strong ban on the possession or transfer of detachable magazines having moderate or larger capacities. Truth be told, HR 1022 is the old ban on steroids. Fourteen more guns are listed by name than in the '94 ban, and only one "dangerous" feature, such as a pistol grip, is needed to make a "nice" gun into a "bad" gun. In September 2007, ICE agents executed federal search warrants at the 11 McDonald's restaurants owned by Mack Associates in the Reno area and at the franchisee's corporate office. During the operation, agents encountered 58 illegal aliens who were working illegally at the McDonald's restaurants. The illegal alien workers were arrested on administrative immigration violations and processed for removal. Approximately 30 of those workers have been returned to their native countries. The remaining illegal workers were provided with documentation allowing them to remain in the United States pending the outcome of the criminal investigation. The government and Mack Associates agreed that the corporation will pay a $1 million fine -- $500,000 for each count, the maximum allowed - and be placed on probation during the period that the fine is outstanding. The court accepted this agreement and sentenced Mack Associates to one year of probation and ordered the corporation to pay the agreed upon $1 million fine, with $300,000 payable immediately and the balance to be paid within nine months. The plea agreement details how Mack Associates' management employed individuals they knew were in the country illegally, including two restaurant managers, by furnishing them with names and Social Security numbers belonging to other individuals. In addition, Jimmy Moore, 47, the franchisee's former vice-president, pleaded guilty to one felony count of inducing an illegal alien to remain in the United States. At sentencing, Moore faces a maximum penalty of up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. A third defendant in the case, Anntoinette Richmond, 44, the corporation's controller, has been charged with one misdemeanor count of continuing employment of an unauthorized alien.

That restaurant has since been torn down. Chan was born in Malaysia but became a naturalized citizen of the United States. Chan had enlisted the services of an employment agency in Georgia that advertised in a Chinese newspaper circulated in Knoxville. “All this agency (hires) is aliens,” Torres said. Mackie countered that what Chan did was to take advantage of illegal immigrants, who would be too afraid of discovery and deportation to report labor law violations or other mistreatment. Federal judge: City ordinance penalizing businesses that hire illegals OK - The right of a small town in Missouri to deal with the cost and crime caused by the influx of illegal aliens has been upheld by a federal judge who ruled the community's ordinance penalizing local companies that hire undocumented workers is not pre-empted by federal law, does not discriminate against Hispanics and does not violate due-process rights or state law. The ruling late Thursday by U.S. District Judge E. Richard Webber was in favor of Valley Park, Mo., located about 20 miles west of St. Louis. City officials have been in court since 2006 after passing the town's first immigration law fining landlords who rent to illegals and suspending business permits of companies that hire them. The city eventually repealed the rental ordinance but continued to target businesses. "It's an across-the-board victory," attorney Kris Kobach, who represents Valley Park and Hazleton, told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "You are going to see this decision quoted by cities all across the country." Kobach noted Judge Webber rejected arguments the local ordinance violated the clause to the Constitution giving exclusive jurisdiction over immigration law to the federal government. Jessica Vaughan, a senior policy analyst with the Center for Immigration Studies, which advocates for stricter immigration policy and enforcement, says some companies may opt to have a contractor conduct the searches E-Verify provides. Another possibility is that some employers "really don't want the answers it may give. They've got illegal workers. If an employer can say they don't know, they don't have to act," Vaughan said. E-Verify does have some flaws: It cannot alert an employer that a Social Security number is already in use in a faraway state, a sign of a possible stolen number.

"There are some employers who are probably relieved because if a large portion of their workers are listed on the mismatch letter, they could lose some or most of their employees, with no one to take their place," said Eileen Scofield, an Atlanta immigration and labor lawyer. A spokesman for the restaurant industry said what the government needs to do is adopt comprehensive immigration reform, rather than more rules. That rule is on hold, however, after a federal district judge in California issued an injunction in October. The case is on appeal to the Ninth District Court of Appeals. "And yet we have a devastating parasitic disease burden among the American poor, right under our nose," Hotez said. He noted a recent study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, presented in November, found that almost 14 percent of the U.S. population is infected with Toxocara roundworms, which dogs and cats can pass to people. "Cysticercosis is another very serious parasitic worm infection ... caused by the tapeworm Taenia solium, that results in seizures and other neurological manifestations," Hotez wrote. He said up to 2,000 new cases of neurological disease caused by tapeworms are diagnosed every year in the United States. Illegal aliens sue Tennessee sheriff and US Dept of Homeland Security for arresting them for being illegal aliens - A group of 11 immigrants from Mexico is suing the Maury County Sheriff’s Department, claiming they were illegally detained because of their “Hispanic appearance.” The sheriff’s department — working with Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which is also named in the suit — has arrested dozens of suspected illegal immigrants in recent months. Most of those arrested were not charged with any crimes other than being illegally in the country. Sheriff Enoch George, who did not immediately return a call Tuesday, said previously that the arrests were made legitimately during criminal investigations in the county about 40 miles south of Nashville. The suit was filed last Thursday in U.S. District Court after about 19 immigrants were arrested two days earlier while deputies and agents searched for a rape suspect in a trailer park. According to the suit, those arrested were stopped without cause. In some cases, authorities entered the immigrants’ homes without warrants and without being invited in. One man was found asleep in his bed. All were asked for “papers” and detained when they could not produce proof of legal residency, the suit states. The attorney who filed the lawsuit, Elliott Ozment, declined to say whether those arrested were legally in the country, saying it has no relevance to the lawsuit. “Any person, regardless of their legal status, whether they are U.S. citizens, temporary visa holders or undocumented ... have basic, fundamental, constitutional rights,” Ozment said. “One of those is the right guaranteed in the Fourth Amendment against improper searches and seizures. The other is the right to due process.” The lawsuit seeks that the defendants be enjoined from further stops, searches and seizures like the one last week; it asks that the plaintiffs not be given over to federal immigration custody and their removal not be pursued; and it requests damages of $100 per plaintiff per day for each day they spend in jail.

But Police Chief Eric Johnson said New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy regulations prohibit non-citizens from serving as police officers. Alessio said the Santa Fe police force, like others around the country, is vying to recruit the same 21- to 30-year-olds as the U.S. military, whose need for recruits is taking a toll on the police department. "Every day, we get approached by young men and women from Mexico who are in the country legally but are not naturalized," Alessio said. "There is a huge pool of people who are dedicated, hardworking and trying to become citizens of this country. They would like nothing better than to devote their time to protecting the communities that they live in," she said.
